Flags on Flemington

Plus: Hillcrest, Cutless, Pierce, Cemetaries and More - always in honor of military veterans from the American Revolution to present

Lake Waccamaw, Columbus County, North Carolina 28450

You've most likely heard the phrase "Flags on Flemington," especially if you're from Columbus County, North Carolina, or the town of Lake Waccamaw. To be clear, Flemington is the main drag in the township, and the street shoulder is where the flags are flown on special occasions, always in honor and thanks to military veterans and local first responders. Flags on Flemington is an initiative founded and sponsored by a long-time resident of the town, with assistance from his wife and others.

Flemington Drive goes past the Depot Museum, the Fire Department/EMS, the Town Hall, and the Library; thus, erecting flags in front of these locations has been dubbed "Flags-on-Flemington."

Veterans Day Nov. 11, 2023

Veteran's Day is coming soon and we are ready.

The flags will be raised on Flemington at midday on Thursday, November 9, 2023, and will remain up for the duration of the holiday weekend before being removed the following week.

Veterans Day and Memorial Day are both federal holidays in the United States that honor military personnel, but their origins and meanings are distinctly different. Every year on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is held to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. After the war between the states, it was first observed as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Veterans Day, on the other hand, is marked every year on November 11th to honor all veterans, alive or deceased, who served in the United States military. Originally It was established to commemorate the end of World War I and was known as Armistice Day. In 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day to honor all veterans who served.

Recognizing the meaning of every holiday that the flags fly, the ones on Flemington always celebrate those who have served honorably and who are presently serving. Additionally, they observe first responders and their noble sacrifices.
